Communal Studies Bibliography (1993-2008)

    May 2008 version

Over 350 new citations were added in 2006 and 320 items were added in 2007.
The 2007 additions are preceded by * and 2008 additions are preceded by +.

The following lists are an attempt to gather together some of the recent research (1993-2008) in Communal Studies. Many, but not all, of the citations for 1993-1999 appeared in issues of the Newsletter of the Communal Studies Association. No additions were made to this list from early 2000 through Summer 2004 but a steady trickle of usage of the 1993-1999 citations prompted me to begin anew and hundreds of citations have been added since 2004. Please send corrections, omissions and potential additions to John Goodin at Preus Library, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. (goodinjo@luther.edu)

Starting in late November 2006 I have begun to add links to bibliographical records from OCLC's WorldCat database for the titles in this list. OCLC began offering free access to this "world's largest library network" in late summer 2006. The visitor to this bibliography can follow a link to a book title for more complete information, including subject headings that can lead to further resources. I have also begun adding links to Previews and Summaries of books found in the Google Book Search collection as well as links to some online abstracts for select journal articles.

[Note: This bibliography is a fairly "low tech", single page website. Because it is one long page, rudimentary searching can be performed by using the Find feature of your web browser.]

For more detailed information I encourage you to visit their web site at http://www.ic.org/fic/cmag/. The Communal Studies Association website contains much valuable information including a link to the table of contents of all issues of Communal Studies, the journal of the Society. Also added to the CSA website in 2004 is the excellent An Annotated Bibliography of Selected Sources for the Study of American Communal History. Those with an interest in Mennonite history will find the online annual Mennonite Life Bibliographies (published by Mennonite Life and online back to 1952) especially useful.
